Hi ladies, I have you all beat!

I'm 48 years old with my first pregnancy, my husband is 48 years old as well.

I am 14 weeks pregnant, feeling great and either swimming 1500 or running a mile every other day.

All the first-round tests were normal, and my neonatologist does not recommend an amniocentesis.

We are blessed and feel very lucky.

It doesn't hurt to be extremely active all your life...
by Randine Lewis

-- Infertility affects one out of six couples today.

Dr. Lewis presents a groundbreaking alternative approach to infertility, explaining how she used traditional Chinese medicine to treat her own infertility, successfully conceiving and giving birth to two children.

In Lewis's experience, women who have undergone three to six months of the dietary changes, herbs and acupuncture treatments become pregnant with no further effort.

Lewis intersperses her somewhat technical examination of the program with anecdotes about her patients, weaving in discussions on diet, herbal supplements, acupuncture, older women and problems related to infertility.
Sure it can happen!

I used to work in radiology, and one day we had a 50+-year-old woman come in for a prenatal sonogram.

She was very surprised to learn that day, she was pregnant with twins...

Two babies, and she said her pregnancy was a surprise.

She said they were not only NOT trying, but thought she was too old to get pregnant.

And the babies were due in just six more weeks!

For what it's worth, in this conversation:

My very good friend had an unplanned pregnancy when she was 44 years old.

She had no idea what her FSH [follicle stimulating hormone] was.

She delivered her son when she was 45 years old.

I know that doesn't necessarily resonate with some of us here.

She might not have had high FSH, and she did have other children many years previously.

Her son is 16 years younger than his closest in age sister, and she wasn't struggling with TTC [trying to conceive].

But I just wanted to share my friend's experience to show the anonymous poster's choice of analogy is not realistic.
I will be 44 years old in April.

I am fifteen weeks pregnant with my seventh child...

A 46-year-old woman in her eighth month of pregnancy took part in a marathon recently held in Boston (the USA).

She covered 42 km within seven hours.

New York resident April Noan, who is to become 47 years old in several weeks, said her doctors and organizers of the marathon allowed her to participate in the heat.

What is more interesting, the woman does not understand why people make so much fuss about her deed?

Her opinion is, pregnancy is not a disease.

Women in past centuries treated pregnancy especially seriously only when it came to its end.
My grandmother had her sixth and last baby when she was 47 years old.

Yes, it was a spontaneous pregnancy.

She thought she was having the menopause.

She was surprised to give birth to a healthy baby boy, at home, after 45-minute labor.

That baby is in his 50s now, and a physician and father himself.

My grandmother was VERY shocked, needless to say.
How to Support Your Wife, Save Your Marriage, and Conquer Infertility!
by Marc Sedaka and Gregory Rosen

-- Mark Sedaka stood by while he and his wife endured endless rounds of drug therapies, sixteen artificial inseminations, ten in-vitro fertilizations, three miscarriages, and, finally, a gestational surrogate (womb for rent) who carried their twin girls to term.

He was as supportive and loving as he could be, but he really wished he'd had a book like What He Can Expect When She's Not Expecting during the process. Most books about dealing with infertility are geared toward women, leaving the man to his own devices when it comes to comfort and encouragement (never a good idea).

With the help of his own infertility doctor, Sedaka provides straightforward guy-friendly advice on situations such as: What questions you should ask at the consultations, how to help rather than annoy, what kinds of tests you and your wife should expect, how to console a wife who appears inconsolable, and how to enjoy procreation sex.

Sedaka's accessible, empathetic voice, combined with the fact that he experienced everything he writes about, makes this a must-have book for any infertile couple.
Can I just add in an e-mail I received, from a woman named Suzanne...

Who was shocked to find herself pregnant at the age of 48 years old!

-- Infertility is a heartbreaking condition that affects nine million American couples each year. It causes tremendous stress, can trigger debilitating sadness and depression and can tear a marriage to shreds.

In Conquering Infertility, Harvard psychologist Alice Domar β whom Vogue calls the Fertility Goddess β provides infertile couples with what they need most: stress relief, support, and hope.

Using the innovative mind/body techniques she has perfected at her clinic, Domar helps infertile women not only regain control over their lives but also boost their chances of becoming pregnant.

With Conquering Infertility, women learn how to cope with infertility in a much more positive way and to carve a path toward a rich, full, happy life.

My 45-year-old friend is happily expecting her first baby, after giving up on fertility treatments.

My husband's first cousin had a baby at 44 years old, and another baby at 45 years old - which was a surprise.

They thought she was too old to get pregnant, so they didn't use birth control - and voila!

My father told me about his own aunt who had a baby at 51 years old in Italy.

This was a long time ago as my father is 80 years old.

So there was no chance in h*ll that it was donor egg.

The fact is, before birth control and things like tubal ligation, women routinely gave birth into their 40s and no one batted an eye.

The birth rate for women in their 40s went down as soon as birth control became available.
There is a direct correlation.

What is different now is women are having their first child in their 40s, whereas long ago they would be having their 10th.

That is the only difference.

But from what I've read there is no difference in the fertility among women who have versus women who have not had children before.

I think the reason people make such a big deal about age now is that there was such a long period of time when the birth rate for women in their 40s was low - because that was their choice.

So people were no longer used to the idea anymore.

Then you have the RE's [reproductive endocrinologist] beating us down with their statistics too.

A long time ago women didn't worry or think about statistics - they were too busy having babies!

-- Unplanned pregnancies happen to women in every season of life: the newly married, the never-married, the empty-nester, the teenager, the overworked mother, the career woman.

I am just a couple months shy of being 49 years old and have been making my empty nest plans with excitement.

Then I recently found out I am expecting baby #4 on my 27-year-old's birthday.

My youngest is almost 16 years old, learning to drive and full of teenage attitude!!

I should be the poster Mom for poor family planning.

I had babies when I was 22 years old, 23 years old, then again at 33 years old, and now again at 49 years old!

When I went to the doctor five years ago and asked for a tubal ligation, he told me I had less than a 1% chance of getting pregnant at my age.

Only people who bought donor eggs got pregnant in their 40s, was his remark.

I had my doubts about his advice, and continued birth control until just a few months ago, thinking if it was 1% five years ago, surely it was zero now?

Wrong!!

I heard about somebody who gave birth to twins when she was 49 years old.

My OB/GYN said pregnancy was possible until approximately 50 years old, depending on the person.

I guess it does not happen a lot, because most people of that age don't want babies anymore.

But, if they would try, there might be more.
Just to let all you hopefuls out there that this does happen!

Women can frequently become pregnant after their 40s and 50s but can struggle to sustain their pregnancy due to lack of hormones and health-related complications, such as blood pressure problems, etc.

When there is a problem with menses, often their OB/GYN gives progesterone to promote sloughing of the lining of the uterus; this may also slough off an early embryo.

Being a nurse, I never assume anymore a woman over 50 years old isn't pregnant, as the last call I received was from a 56-year-old woman who sustained a pregnancy unassisted in any way.

She gave birth to a beautiful baby boy, with no complications at all.

She even had a natural birth, with no medical assistance!

When women are older and start skipping a few periods, itβs only natural to assume menopause is knocking on the door.

Even though the chances of women falling pregnant naturally over 40 are less, it doesnβt mean that it canβt happen β even if youβve stopped getting your period.

There are so many women who get naturally pregnant in their 43, 44, 45th year... and even older than that!

Just yesterday, my husband told me about a sister of one of his acquaintances.

She got pregnant for the very first time at 48 years old, when she was thought to be in menopause.

Now that baby is a wonderful girl 12 years old!

You just never know...

Right now, on another fertility forum I read, there are currently about sixteen women who are pregnant and all are over 40 years old.

Of those women, one woman is 44 years old - pregnant with IVF [in vitro fertilization], but using her own eggs.

She will be 45 years old when she delivers her baby.

Four of these women are 45 years old - all are natural pregnancies - conceived with their own eggs, no medical assistance.

Two of those women are pregnant wwith their very first pregnancy ever!

One woman is 47 years old. She says it was a surprise pregnancy, they were not even trying to get pregnant.

In fact, she thought she was going into menopause.

Remember, these pregnancies are ALL with their own eggs.

I am 44 years old and 30 weeks and 2 days pregnant with my first child, a little boy.

I will be 45 years old when he is born.

I was not my intention to do it this late, but I did not meet my husband until age 39 and we married at age 41 (he was 10 days shy of his 44th birthday).

We decided to wait a year before trying to conceive just to settle in as a married couple, get to know each other, and to save enough to get a house.

After that, we tried and were unsuccessful for 1 1/2 years. I was tested and he was tested.

My tests came back normal, but his sperm count results were slightly low.

Although he has daughter (now 20 years old) from a previous marriage, they think it was due to a large varicose vein on one of his testicles - plus the blood pressure meds he is now taking.

His doctor wanted to do surgery but we said no, and decided if God did not give us a baby of our own within the next few months then we would just adopt.

We did not want to do IVF [in vitro fertilization] since it is so costly (neither of our insurances covers it).

Plus we have moral issues with it.

In April of 2006, I discovered I was pregnant. We were overjoyed and told everyone.

Then at the end of the eighth week, I started spotting.

I ended up having a miscarriage at week nine due to a blighted ovum, which was one of the most painful things (more emotional than physical) I have ever experienced in my adult life.

The most painful was having to tell everyone since we told everyone we knew about the pregnancy.

Some were sympathetic and supportive but others said some well-meaning but insensitive things.

I was often reminded of my age and told not to get my hopes up to high.

One woman even had the audacity to say I told you so.

I did not have a D+C and bled for 2 1/2 weeks.

After that, I went through two dry weeks and had another very strange, very heavy 3 day period.

Then in August 2006, I found out I was pregnant again.

Since I was already seven weeks along by the time I got to the OB/GYN it must have happened in July which was less than 2 months after the miscarriage.

Now we are at 7.5 months and, according to the ultrasound, the baby is perfectly good and healthy.

All other tests checked out normal also.

I would love to do a home birth but hubby is against it, so we have just finished Bradley natural birth classes, have turned in a birth plan.

If all goes well and there are no complications, we plan to do a hospital birth au natural - with no drugs.

-- This book is just what you need if you are having trouble getting pregnant. Dana's book provides all the well-meaning advice you could find.

But do not be fooled by the kind manner in which she presents her advice, because this book is filled with the fruitage of many months of careful research.

Dana begins with the basics of explaining what ovulation is. This is the most crucial aspect of understanding how the ovulation diet works.

Once the foundation has been laid, Dana next explains what Cervical Mucus is, and its role in helping you conceive the child you have always wanted.

Dana even explains the foods that will help you become more fertile. Best of all, she presents a few of the methods that have been tried and proven to help women get pregnant.
Let me share my story!

My grandmother gave birth to my auntie when my grandmother was 46 years old.

Since my grandmother was so healthy, doctors said there was no reason she couldnβt carry the baby.

She had a very easy pregnancy, and birth, from what I heard.

And that birth happened over 40 years ago!

So no donor egg here!

Every baby is a blessing, and if the baby is loved and cared for, then who is to judge really?

I am firmly convinced you will be just fine.
-- Pregnancy books on the market have one of two audiences - the teen with an unplanned pregnancy or the adult with a planned and chosen one.

Nowhere is there a book for the almost 3 million adult women facing surprise pregnancy every year.
I know someone who got pregnant at 52 years old.

She wasn't trying to get pregnant, it was a total surprise!

She said her husband nearly fainted when she told him!

She had a great pregnancy, an easy birth, and a very healthy baby boy.

Since it happened so easily for her, she has decided to try for another baby now, and she is 54 years old.

I would not be surprised if it works for her again!

Good luck and best wishes to you!

I was reading an interesting book, Fertility Wisdom: How Traditional Chinese Medicine Can Help Overcome In-fertility

In her book, she references a 50-year-old client who conceived twins naturally.

In an interview, Angela C. Wu was asked: Youβve helped many couples conceive β assisting women and men who were otherwise deemed fertility-challenged or even 'infertile' for one reason or another. Science loves statistics, any you can share?

Angela C. Wu replied: We see up to 200 new clients a year.

Last year, our clinic helped 79 women become pregnant β 39 women with support from Western reproductive technologies, and 40 women who conceived naturally.

Twenty-nine of our female fertility clients were over the age of 40, and 14 of these women conceived naturally.

Most had wondered if they would ever conceive at all.

From her website, Wu's Healing Centre:

Under Dr. Wuβs care, women with FSH levels of 65 have conceived naturally; women with levels as high as 118 have seen their FSH drop to 9.

Women up to 50 years of age have conceived naturally and carried babies full term.

Men have overcome sperm disorders. Fibroids have disappeared.

Women who have experienced multiple miscarriages, ovarian or tubal dysfunction, thin uterine lining, premature menopause, irregular cycles, endometriosis, and inexpiable infertility have delivered healthy, happy babies.
-- At Wu's Healing Center in San Francisco, miracles are happening.

Women and their partners come to the clinic--often from across the country -- to fulfill a passionately held yet fragile dream: to conceive and deliver the healthy baby that mainstream doctors have told them they cannot have.

Using traditional Chinese medical techniques, sometimes integrated with Western fertility treatments, Dr. Angela Wu is helping these couples experience the miracle of birth.

At a time when one in five U.S. couples is struggling with fertility problems, this practical and uplifting volume, filled with the inspirational stories of Dr. Wu's grateful patients, will be a godsend.
I am another 45 year-old mother-to-be, I will be almost 46 1/2 years old when the baby is born in late summer.

No interventions and I had one miscarriage at 44 years old, after six weeks along.

My Down's risk was 1 in 18 before my nuchal translucency/blood test.

It was thankfully decreased to 1 in 185 afterward.

I'm feeling very thankful and will get another ultrasound, and probably an amnio at 18 weeks.

-- In their search for alternative means for building a family, those who face infertility turn to the nearly 500 reproductive specialty clinics across the United States.

While egg donors enter into the picture for a variety of reasons, every reason has the same desired result: a family to call one's own.

Same-sex and single-by-choice parents are more prevalent than ever in the fertility industry, and there is no definitive, up-to-date guide to help families of all types approach egg donation, especially these niche groups. Resources are fragmented, true regardless of the family structure.

The Insider's Guide to Egg Donation is the first how-to-handbook that helps families of all types navigate the less talked about but widely practiced egg donor landscape with a warm and friendly tone, giving those in search of a different kind of stork the answers and information they need as they begin to research family-building options.
That's EXACTLY what happened to the mother of a friend of mine many years ago.
She had a wonderful vacation, an enjoyable dalliance with a lovely man, and returned to real life back home.

I know that it can happen because my Father was born when his mother was 47 years old.

She always wanted children, but it just never happened before this.

Because she was never pregnant before, she didn't even realized she was carrying a baby until she was 6 months along.

I am told she did not regret having to wait to have her first, and only child.

She was able to travel, gain life experience, financial stability, as well as a supportive family on her side long before she became a mom.

Thereβs a wonderful sense of calm about being a mother in your 40s.

I can't relate to being an over 50 years old mom, but I'm the daughter of an over 50 mom.

I'm child number seven, arriving when my mom was 55 years old, and her second menopause baby!

Most of our nieces and nephews were older than us, except two were born within eight months of me!

My sisters said what was weird was being pregnant when Mom was, and she didn't go crazy over the grand-kids as much as their in-laws did.

I was so lucky to have my mom for 40 years after my birth.

My older kids loved her sooo much.
