Pregnant at 51
Hi, I decided to give my baby a chance, thanks to those who sent messages to me. I went for a nuchal scan and blood test for Downs last week and it has come back as a one in two chance of Downs, etc.
I am having an amnio [amniocentesis] on August 22nd to see if baby is Downs. My nuchal scan revealed 4.5mm and the norm is 2mm. I don’t know what I will do if my baby is Downs, don’t know if I will be strong enough to terminate or be able to bring up a child with Downs either, at my grand old age of 51.
Does anyone out there have any experience of Downs, and if so can you give me some advice? I am so confused having gotten this far. The father is out of the picture, so just me and my 13 year old son now. Many thanks for taking the time to read this, take care - Linda

Oh, I know this must be so nerve racking for you! You must feel so confused and scared! Hang in there, girl!
You know, I have a co worker whose 16 year old brother has downs syndrome. He (and his entire family--including his wife!!) maintain that the brother, Martie, is the coolest, nicest person they have ever met in their life. (My co worker's wife says she likes Martie better than her husband ;)) And just today, at my cousin's graduation from highschool, I saw one of his fellow graduates-- a smiley 18 year old boy with Down's-- receive his diploma and a special award for "overcoming obstacles". The entire audience cheered for him.
Remember, you have a 50 per cent chance that your baby does NOT have Down's... and if s/he does, these are amazing amazing children who are the joy of their parents' life. There will be many rewards in having a constantly smiling, loving un conditionally child!
