She's my mom, she had me when she was 49

Catherine McDiarmid-Watt | Tuesday, April 10, 2007 | 0 comments

Years ago when I was in high school I worked at an ice cream shop. I was waiting on a boy (about 10) and his "grandmother". The boy was ordering for both while his "grandmother" left the table to use the ladies room.

When I asked him what his "grandmother" wanted he said, "that's not my grandmother - she's my mom, she had me when she was 49." The poor kid must have been so used to people referring to his mom as his "grandmother" that he developed a pretty well rehearsed response.

I always remembered them because it seemed so amazing that she had a child in her late 40's. Anything is possible!!

About Catherine: I am mom to three grown sons, two grandchildren and two rescue dogs. After years of raising my boys as a single mom, I remarried a wonderful man who had never had a child of his own. Unexpectedly, I found myself pregnant at 49!
Sadly we lost that precious baby at 8 weeks, and decided to try again. Five more losses, turned down for donor egg, foster care and adoption due to my age and losses - we have accepted that there will be no more babies in our house.
