Pregnant at 50, naturally

I am 50 years old, and 13 weeks pregnant with my fifth child.

I conceived naturally and will be 51 years old when my son is born.

I am using a midwife, and have no health issues whatsoever, even given my advanced maternal age!!

That phrase cracks me up!

I don't even have elevated blood pressure.

I am athletic, still ride my bike, although have recently switched to a ladies' version for ease of dismount because I got hit big time with relaxin, and for safety.

It's been 18 years since I last gave birth, so this is still pretty mind-boggling to me, but this child is very much wanted!

I'm not at all intimidated by the idea of giving birth at my age and after an 18-year gap between this one and my last child.

I'm not a high-risk pregnancy, and a lifetime of living healthy I'm sure has contributed to how great I feel.

But even if a woman finds herself pregnant or trying to get pregnant after 40, it's never too late to start eating right and exercising.

Baby dust to all those trying, and sticky dust to all of us having already conceived!!

Thanks!! Laura

About Catherine: I am mom to three grown sons, two grandchildren and two rescue dogs. After years of raising my boys as a single mom, I remarried a wonderful man who had never had a child of his own. Unexpectedly, I found myself pregnant at 49!
Sadly we lost that precious baby at 8 weeks, and decided to try again. Five more losses, turned down for donor egg, foster care and adoption due to my age and losses - we have accepted that there will be no more babies in our house.

Laura, I very happy for you and your family. I'm not sure what the baby dust will do; nevertheless, I shall continue to hope and pray that I will receive this great blessing as well.

your story is amazing. I have been pregant later in life (at 43) but it only lasted 14 weeks. At 50, i would love another one. Do you have any health advice? I am in great shape (teach dance) and healthy in every way. I know there are options with IVF donor eggs and I have not given up with that idea, but it would be great to have one again naturally. Am I too late?

im 49 and pregnant, i never thought this would happen naturally, so i stopped taking the pill about 3 years ago, i have 4 children and 3 grand children, i just started a great job, and finally started to enjoy my new found freedom after all my children are now adults, would i be a complete selfish B***ch if i considered termination, when there seems to be so many women out there who would consider this to be a great blessing,,, so stuck dont know what to do.

Please have the baby and give it up for adoption...so many people want babies...you are not a bad person for thinking that...I am sure you are just nervous... Please consider other options befor choosing termination...you could give birth to the next famous person... I just lost a baby, miscarriage at 45 unexpected...I would do anything to be able to be pregnant with that child...going through a tough time...you are blessed...good luck with your life and the babies...

I am 50 have four grown children from a previous marriage. The person I'm with now is much younger and needs a child. I want to get pregnant and really hope it does work. If it does not happen naturally I will not adopt or go any other route but I really hope it does.

I am 44 and have just found out that I am pregnant with my 5th child. It has been 12 years since I had my twin girls.I was a little shocked as I thought I was passed it, but obviously I am not. My husband is stoked and thinks he is the Super Sperm Man!!! I just want a healthy and happy baby. I am studying my Masters degree and will finish before the baby is born, I hope. I may have to change the path I wanted to go down because of this pregnancy, but I would not change it for the world. I am much calmer and more relaxed than before. My main worries are having to have numerous tests and the possible complications that may occur with being older. Other than that, it has been a really pleasant surprise rather than an oopsy!!

I am 47, trying to have a baby naturally for 5 years. Never met the right man until too late (married for the first time at 42). I feel sad, but its nice to hear all of the positive stories out there.

It's almost embarrassing to reveal my age because it's just so unbelievable - even or especially to me. I'm 66 and find that I am 19 weeks pregnant with twins (all natural - no in-vitro or egg donating or medical processes of any kind). I have been 16 years without periods and have had two tubal pregnancies. With one the Dr. removed the entire fallopian tube and with the other he just removed the section of the tube with the pregnancy (that was 22 years ago). Apparently the body is capable of incredible healing. My oldest birth child is 43 with two daughters of his own. I have a total of six children including two sets of twins we adopted in my forties (now all young adults). My husband is 12 years younger than me with no birth children of his own (but a great father of our adopted children). Honestly, even with 24 hour morning sickness (still) and a rapidly growing belly (6.5 new inches so far) I couldn't really accept that I was pregnant until I began feeling the babies move recently. Now I'm beginning to think that the babies may be here to stay and I should begin making plans for raising another set of twins (which I loved doing with the two adopted sets).

OMG How fantastic for you 2thetop WOW is all I can say and when I read your story I had joy in my heart. I am 50, just this month (Mar2012), and have recently reconciled with my partner of 22 years ago - we lost 2 babies back when we were kids (20 + 22yos) and after the loss od our last baby we split - He married had 2 boys - Me neither married nor had children. After 22 years we found each other again - funnily on FB - - We have spent 2 amazing weeks together - and enjoyed endless hours of love making - I had been told that once you reach 50 forget kids - I have yet to start menopause - infact I still menstruate EVERY 28 days, without fail - Anyway I am feeling very nauseous, have been for 3 days now, but my period doesn't commence till 23rd of this month, so.......I daresay I will have to wait and see. He is very God filled and believes in miracles and whilst we have not spoken at all of the possibilities - will just wait and see. If a child is meant to be it will be.
Once again 2thetop WOW and enjoy

Wow! Congratulations to 2thetop. My 22 year old daughter and I have been discussing conscious conception and birthing. I have believed, having gone through menopause (at least, I have had no period for almost 3 years), that I am through with childbearing years. I would still love to have a child with a loving partner consciously conceived, and so, I receive encouragement from your story that this could truly happen. This is something I would like to create positive visualizations about for myself, a partner and a being waiting to be here. Thanks for showing that all those eggs are still around. Blessings on you and your family.

Dear Anonymous who is 44 with the Super Sperm Man~ No complications need be necessary. Get yourself to a midwife who will be affirming of your maturity and readiness for a child. Find a good birthing coach. I can suggest www.birthemissary.com Perhaps you can find a good midwife through that site. My best.

I just gave birth to a surrogate baby at age 50. Although I had complications in the end I do secretly wish to have another baby of my own. I have 4 children and the last was born when I was 44. Because of a terrible birth experience with this one I feel that having another baby conceived with love, would help me to heal emotionally. However, it's a lifetime commitment to raise them!

I just love all these posts!! I am 49 and believing God for a miracle baby. I truly hope those who find they are pregnant over 50 will continue to share their stories as they truly give hope to those of us who are wanting to have another child at this age. Blessings, Page M.

  22. Here is a crazy one...I am a 28 year old man who had a high octane sexual affair with a 51 year old married woman.
Her husband had a vasectomy 17 years prior after their 2nd child.
I just found out that she is preggo with my baby.
She assumed that she had begun menopause as she had missed her period after being like clock work her entire life.
We had sex often and sometimes did it 2 or 3 times per meeting during our 7 month tirade.
Not sure what we are going to do.

  23. I just want to say thank you to all you wonderful women out there. Please pray for me and keep the faith.

  24. I will be fifty in May and trying to convince my husband to agree to having my Mirena removed but he is unsure. Has anyone had the uncontrollable desire to get pregnant at this age?

Wow, reading these comments are truly encouraging because stuff like this doesn't make the news unless you are famous (Janet Jackson). I have been desiring another baby (I'm currently 48) and thought the possibility was slim because I had never heard of stories from "normal", non famous couples. This gives me hope and encouragement, believing in God, miracles are possible! Thanks for sharing!!

It's great to hear that one can get pregnant naturally at this stage. However, I would love to hear the results of the pregnancy good or bad (live birth, MC, etc). Could you please let us know the results? To help the rest of us out?
