I'm 43, this morning I found out I am pregnant

Catherine McDiarmid-Watt | Tuesday, October 02, 2007 | 2 comments

I'm 43 and this morning I took a pregnancy test and found out I am pregnant. I have 3 other children, 14, 12, and 10. Life is good. The kids are at a somewhat independent age. I enjoy doing volunteer work at school and bowling with my friends.

I really don't want to be tied down again. I am also petrified about whether the baby will be healthy. I know there is nothing I can do, but having a baby at 44, I worry about what I will do if it needs special care over the years and particularly when we are aging.

My children will be raising their own families and I wouldn't want to burden them with a needy sibling.

About Catherine: I am mom to three grown sons, two grandchildren and two rescue dogs. After years of raising my boys as a single mom, I remarried a wonderful man who had never had a child of his own. Unexpectedly, I found myself pregnant at 49!
Sadly we lost that precious baby at 8 weeks, and decided to try again. Five more losses, turned down for donor egg, foster care and adoption due to my age and losses - we have accepted that there will be no more babies in our house.

I am 44 and have recently found out I am pregnant. My eldest daughter will be 20 on October 28 and my youngest is 16-will be 17 in January. My partner has two children who are 14 and 11.
I am petrified to say the least. There is so many negative stats given for older moms..so your stories are heartwarming and reassuring. I'm not sure whats' in store for me ....I'm only 6 weeks at this point...but if this baby is meant to be-it will-and all I can do is pray he/she will be healthy! Thanks for your stories!

  2. Judy - Congrats on your pregnancy! I can imagine your worries, the whole medical profession seems out to scare older women to death!

I am so glad my stories have helped, and hope the rest of your pregnancy is smooth and worry-free.
