5 babies/day conceived by women over 50

Catherine McDiarmid-Watt | Saturday, February 16, 2008 | 0 comments

"A lot of perimenopausal [women] are unaware of the facts surrounding pregnancy during menopause. More than 60% of unintended pregnancies in women over 40 are aborted." Source

So if the babies born were only 40% of the total conceived, doesn't the above study show that about 1,350 babies could have been conceived by women over 50 between 1997 to 1999???

Or maybe even more, because the risk of miscarriage is supposed to be something like 90% - so if that 539 live born babies was only 10%, then perhaps something like 5,390 babies were conceived by women over 50!!

Which would make about 5 babies conceived every single day in women over 50! The vast majority of them, without medical assistance.

"Chances of pregnancy are lower in your menopausal years than during your 20's and 30's. By the time you are 40, your chances of becoming pregnant naturally are reduced by 50%. This percentage continues to decline the older you get. However, you are not completely infertile until your periods have stopped for at least one complete year. In fact, two-thirds of women between the ages of 40 and 44 ovulate regularly during perimenopause." Source

Catherine

About Catherine: I am mom to three grown sons, two grandchildren and two rescue dogs. After years of raising my boys as a single mom, I remarried a wonderful man who had never had a child of his own. Unexpectedly, I found myself pregnant at 49!
Sadly we lost that precious baby at 8 weeks, and decided to try again. Five more losses, turned down for donor egg, foster care and adoption due to my age and losses - we have accepted that there will be no more babies in our house.
