A 52-year-old has given birth to triplets

Catherine McDiarmid-Watt | Sunday, November 19, 2006 | 0 comments

A 52-year-old who became a grandmother last year has given birth to triplets, baffling doctors in Naples who say the likelihood of such a case is "one in a billion".

Gabriele, Alessio and Nunzia were born several weeks early and were reported to be in good condition despite weighing just 1,7kg, 1,5kg and 1,1kg respectively.

The woman insists she did not undergo any fertility treatment, but doctors remained unconvinced. Mamma Mellone said her family had a history of "mature" pregnancies, with a cousin giving birth to her fourth child at the age of 51.

About Catherine: I am mom to three grown sons, two grandchildren and two rescue dogs. After years of raising my boys as a single mom, I remarried a wonderful man who had never had a child of his own. Unexpectedly, I found myself pregnant at 49!
Sadly we lost that precious baby at 8 weeks, and decided to try again. Five more losses, turned down for donor egg, foster care and adoption due to my age and losses - we have accepted that there will be no more babies in our house.
