Average age of her home birth mothers was 44

Catherine McDiarmid-Watt | Sunday, December 31, 2006 | 0 comments

When I was first seeing my home birth midwife, I asked her if I was one of her oldest clients --because my mother had made a negative comment about me being "too old" to be having a baby at age 38.

My midwife started laughing, and said I was actually one of her youngest clients, most of the women she saw were over 40 -- with the average age of her home birth mothers being about 44. After I told my mother what my midwife said, she never made any more comments

About Catherine: I am mom to three grown sons, two grandchildren and two rescue dogs. After years of raising my boys as a single mom, I remarried a wonderful man who had never had a child of his own. Unexpectedly, I found myself pregnant at 49!
Sadly we lost that precious baby at 8 weeks, and decided to try again. Five more losses, turned down for donor egg, foster care and adoption due to my age and losses - we have accepted that there will be no more babies in our house.
