I am 5 weeks pregnant at 45

Catherine McDiarmid-Watt | Wednesday, March 07, 2007 | 2 comments

Pregnant at 45 - I just found out I am 5 weeks pregnant (naturally!) after years of trying and expensive fertility treatments. After looking at all the statistics, I am REALLY depressed! Is there anyone out there than can give me encouraging news?

About Catherine: I am mom to three grown sons, two grandchildren and two rescue dogs. After years of raising my boys as a single mom, I remarried a wonderful man who had never had a child of his own. Unexpectedly, I found myself pregnant at 49!
Sadly we lost that precious baby at 8 weeks, and decided to try again. Five more losses, turned down for donor egg, foster care and adoption due to my age and losses - we have accepted that there will be no more babies in our house.

  1. Without actually looking it up, I'm thinking that the risk of Down Syndrome (the problem everyone always thinks of first)is about 1 in 10 at age 45. This means there's a 90% chance the child will *not* have Down Syndrome.

Our daughter-in-law had a daughter with DS at age 23. And if it should happen.... please know that this child is the best thing ever to happen in our family. She is just a delightful person, 4 years old now, and none of us can remember life without her.

I am 43, just took a pregnancy test about an hour ago, and then another, and I'm still coming down from the shock of both of them being positive. Somebody help! Is it really okay to have a first baby at my age? Help!
