Recently learned we are expecting at 48

Catherine McDiarmid-Watt | Friday, February 15, 2008 | 0 comments

At 48, I have remarried. I have two college aged children, from my first marriage.

This is also a second marriage for my husband, who lost his wife to cancer many years ago, he is 61 (looks 45) and has two children from that marriage. We recently learned we are expecting and are very happy, well once the shock wore off.

We are both aware we will be the "oldies" at preschool, let alone college. The biggest thing for us is knowing we both have very successful careers, are extremely set financially and will have more time to devote to this child than we had when we were younger. I certainly don't recommend this for everyone, but we are thrilled.

By the way, though I have not had the pleasure with my children, my husband became a grandfather again this weekend for the 7th time. Well at least this baby will have playmates!

About Catherine: I am mom to three grown sons, two grandchildren and two rescue dogs. After years of raising my boys as a single mom, I remarried a wonderful man who had never had a child of his own. Unexpectedly, I found myself pregnant at 49!
Sadly we lost that precious baby at 8 weeks, and decided to try again. Five more losses, turned down for donor egg, foster care and adoption due to my age and losses - we have accepted that there will be no more babies in our house.
