Honeymoon surprise, 1st pregnancy at 45

Catherine McDiarmid-Watt | Saturday, March 01, 2008 | 0 comments

These stories reminded me that when I went to see my "regular" doctor last year (for something not pregnancy related). I mentioned to her that I was TTC [trying to conceive], but that I was afraid I was "too old."

She laughed, and proceeded to tell me about two of her patients that were currently pregnant: one at 45 and one at 47.

The 45 year old's baby was a "honeymoon surprise" a first pregnancy just after a new marriage. The 47 year old's pregnancy was planned and she used charts, etc.

When my doctor called the high risk OB [obstetrician] to refer this patient, she was told by the high risk office that a 47 year old pregnant woman wasn't that unusual for them (and this is NOT a city with a large population!)

About Catherine: I am mom to three grown sons, two grandchildren and two rescue dogs. After years of raising my boys as a single mom, I remarried a wonderful man who had never had a child of his own. Unexpectedly, I found myself pregnant at 49!
Sadly we lost that precious baby at 8 weeks, and decided to try again. Five more losses, turned down for donor egg, foster care and adoption due to my age and losses - we have accepted that there will be no more babies in our house.
