A woman from Yorktown Heights has become one of the country's oldest mothers. Her obstetrician, Dr. Edwin Pan, said it was the second baby in two years delivered by his 56-year-old patient, whom he declined to name.
The woman and her husband, who is also 56, have two other children, 19 and 2. Dr. Pan said the baby, who weighed 7 pounds, 6 ounces and was healthy, was delivered at Lawrence Hospital in Bronxville.
The woman received a donor egg that was inseminated with her husband's sperm during a laboratory fertilization performed in Las Vegas, the obstetrician said, adding that the 2-year-old had been conceived in the same manner.
Dr. Pan, who practices in Mount Vernon, said that older maternity patients must be followed closely, because they are prone to high blood pressure, premature labor and other complications of pregnancy.
''Certainly, the mother has to be cardiovascularly fit,'' he said, ''and we worry about the baby not growing well. But this woman did very well.''
The oldest woman to deliver a child, according to birth records, was a 63-year-old woman in California two years ago who also used an egg donor.
The Yorktown Heights woman is one of six her age in New York State to give birth since 1993, Robert Kenny, a spokesman for the State Health Department, said. There are no recorded births to women older than 56 in New York, he said.
