Pregnant at 50

Catherine McDiarmid-Watt | Thursday, November 20, 2008 | 1 comments

So here I am, pregnant at age 50, dumped by a man I loved for six years. I have no insurance and am presently unemployed.

I am too old to be a single parent, and I don't want this cold, selfish man back. I don't know what to do to keep my sanity and make this decision alone.

About Catherine: I am mom to three grown sons, two grandchildren and two rescue dogs. After years of raising my boys as a single mom, I remarried a wonderful man who had never had a child of his own. Unexpectedly, I found myself pregnant at 49!
Sadly we lost that precious baby at 8 weeks, and decided to try again. Five more losses, turned down for donor egg, foster care and adoption due to my age and losses - we have accepted that there will be no more babies in our house.

    Dear "Pregnant at 50",
With your permission, I would like to come along side you in support and prayer. Pregnancy and childbirth at any age is a miracle but at 50 proves you have been touched by a divine hand. Perhaps you are capable of more than you know and at age 50 you still have many years to raise and nurture a child into adulthood. I am sure standing in your shoes your situation feels overwhelming but perhaps if you take it a day at a time it may feel less foreboding.

I was in a similar circumstance 17 years ago. I was in the process of divorcing an abusive husband after 10 years of marriage, had just lost my job, had an 8 month old daughter, had no money, no home and was half a continent from my family and any support system and then found out I was pregnant with twins. I spent time in shelters and after about a month, out of desperation for my daughter's wellbeing,I walked into a local church. I was sure I would be shamed and chastised for leaving my husband but instead I found myself surrounded with unconditional, non judgmental love and support. They helped me become the much stronger, self-confident person I am today. They helped me to find employment at a hospital in a small town near by and a home for me and my 2 daughters( my ex-husband beat me and kicked me in the stomach when he found out he would have to pay support for 3 children and kill one of the babies). Four years later I met a wonderful man who not only willing excepted me with all my emotional baggage but also was eager to become a kind and loving father to my girls. After years of me healing and his patience we married. Together we have built a beautiful life. My oldest daughter is in her 2nd year of college, my 17 year old is in her senior year, my husband and I, after multiple miscarriages, adopted a little girl in 2004 and she just turned 5, and in August 2008, at 45, after giving up all hope of ever having a child together, we found out I was pregnant. Today I am in week 21 and baby and I are doing really great.

I shared this with you to encourage you to never give up hope. We never know what's just around the corner and life can hold some wonderful surprises. Your pregnancy at 50 is testament to the fact that we're never too old for for good things to happen in our lives. So hang in there, you can do this, one day at a time.
