Capable of conceiving right up to menopause

Question: My girlfriend and I have been talking about trying for a baby. However, she is 45. Is it sensible for her to try and conceive at this age.
Answer: Women are quite capable of conceiving right up to their menopause. It's not really that uncommon for women to have children in their 40s.
If your partner has a regular menstrual cycle and has no history of gynaecological problems, and your sperm count is OK, I wouldn't necessarily suggest you seek help with your fertility at this stage. The best test of fertility is to try to conceive - and that will be easier if you're relaxed about it.
Yours sincerely, Dr Stephen Collins, GP

About Catherine: I am mom to three grown sons, two grandchildren and two rescue dogs. After years of raising my boys as a single mom, I remarried a wonderful man who had never had a child of his own. Unexpectedly, I found myself pregnant at 49!
Sadly we lost that precious baby at 8 weeks, and decided to try again. Five more losses, turned down for donor egg, foster care and adoption due to my age and losses - we have accepted that there will be no more babies in our house.
