thrilled to be having this baby due around her 50th birthday

I just joined [Trying to Conceive over 40 list] and was feeling depressed because I am now 49 and wondering if there is any hope for me even though I have not had any menopause symptoms.

The first person I met was Liz who is also 49 and several months pregnant. She said the pregnancy was a complete surprise. She was out to dinner with her partner one evening and became ill. She was rushed to the emergency room, because it was believed she had contracted food poisoning.

Someone in the ER started asking her when she had her last menstrual period and then proceeded to do a pregnancy test, which was positive. Although the pregnancy was not planned, she says she and her partner are thrilled to be having this baby, who will be born around her 50th birthday.

This has given me so much hope.

About Catherine: I am mom to three grown sons, two grandchildren and two rescue dogs. After years of raising my boys as a single mom, I remarried a wonderful man who had never had a child of his own. Unexpectedly, I found myself pregnant at 49!
Sadly we lost that precious baby at 8 weeks, and decided to try again. Five more losses, turned down for donor egg, foster care and adoption due to my age and losses - we have accepted that there will be no more babies in our house.
