The twin rate increases for the age group 45-49

Catherine McDiarmid-Watt | Monday, April 09, 2007 | 0 comments

The older one is, the higher one's chance of having fraternal twins. The twinning rate is doubled for ages 35 to 40 and then decreases again, probably due to a decrease in fertility as one ages. The rate increases again for the age group 45 to 49 years.

Older women are having multiples at an increasingly high rate. There were more twins born to women ages 45 to 49 in 1997 than during the entire decade of the 1980s.

About Catherine: I am mom to three grown sons, two grandchildren and two rescue dogs. After years of raising my boys as a single mom, I remarried a wonderful man who had never had a child of his own. Unexpectedly, I found myself pregnant at 49!
Sadly we lost that precious baby at 8 weeks, and decided to try again. Five more losses, turned down for donor egg, foster care and adoption due to my age and losses - we have accepted that there will be no more babies in our house.
