I too found out by surprise I was pregnant at 45. Problems arose.

Then shock again, 5 months later pregnant again. (We were trying since I was 39 with no results. One daughter 11 years ago with fertility treatments)

This time no treatments and pregnant twice at age 45!

First pregnancy at 46! I don't know how far along I am, since I stopped paying attention to my cycle many months ago. All that work 3 years ago with fertility testing, taking temp every morning, charting hormone levels just got to be too much with no result!

I finally bought a pregnancy test on Dec 21, and it took less than the time recommended to show a positive result! I didn't believe it, went the next day and bought 2 more tests. One was the kind that reads either “pregnant” or “not pregnant“. That is the one I showed my husband. I knew he would not believe me otherwise!

I am 24 weeks pregnant at age 45, with children ages 19 ( away at college), 14, and 9. I was trying to conceive because I had remarried, and husband #2 had never had kids, but it still was a shock to actually be able to conceive.

Then, I was VERY nervous about abnormalities. We went for the testing because I knew I was the kind of person who would rather have the information than spend my whole pregnancy worrying. Everything has proven to be very normal so far. My kids have been surprisingly supportive.

My friends mostly shake their heads in wonder that I would want to go through all this again, but they too have been supportive.

I'm 43, and this morning I took a pregnancy test and found out I am pregnant. I have 3 other children, 14, 12, and 10.

Life is good. The kids are at a somewhat independent age. I enjoy doing volunteer work at school and bowling with my friends. I really don't want to be tied down again. I am also petrified about whether the baby will be healthy.

I know there is nothing I can do, but having a baby at 44, I worry about what I will do if it needs special care over the years, and particularly when we are aging. My children will be raising their own families, and I wouldn't want to burden them with a needy sibling.

At 45 years old, it took 10 days from the time I stopped taking the birth control pill (started when 18 years old) before conceiving the "old fashioned way." This was the first time trying for me. I'm now 36 weeks and expecting healthy baby girl to deliver on or about 4/3/06.

Don't believe everything you read. I've met more people who are healthy, active 40-somethings who have gotten pregnant in less time than the 20-somethings

I am 43 and am 5 weeks pregnant with my 4th. I also got pregnant at 39, almost 40, but miscarried at 7 weeks. No help needed for conception. Funny though, I used Clomid for my 1st 2 kids.

There is no stopping the biological clock, as the birth rate shows. In 1999, there were 622,000 babies born in England and Wales. The most productive group, surprisingly, was the women aged 30-34: they had 185,300 babies. By the time women reached 40-44, they produced 13,600 specimens, and at 45-plus, 635 gave birth. In fact, nearly 300,000 women over 30 had babies, a cheering thought, until you think of the nappies.

But the figures leave much in the dark. How many 40-plus women are still trying, how many are still using contraceptives, how many are already infertile? Looking back can cast some light. In 1938, the number of women having babies in the 30-34 age group was actually smaller than today, even though the birth rate was roughly the same. Madonna and Cherie wouldn't have even made a paragraph then, when 25,000 women in the 40-44 age group gave birth - almost double current levels - and 2,200 babies were born to women over 45. That's almost four times as many as now. Clearly, choice, as well as biology, plays an important part - the really sharp decline in the birth rate for 35-plus women came in the 1970s, when it halved, coinciding with easier access to the Pill and abortion.

So, by when should you have your fertility tested? Unfortunately, exactly at what rate fertility declines is impossible to say. Nobody has measured the number of women trying to get pregnant at 40, say, and studied how successful they are. To state, as one Sunday broadsheet report of the American campaign did, that the rate of conception drops to a mere 2 per cent at 40 is very bleak and misleading.

No one can deny that you may have to wait longer to get pregnant once you are in you mid- to late-thirties, or that you may fail. As someone who did have a baby at the drop of a hat at 40, and another, albeit after three miscarriages, at 46, my advice is this: next time you see a shock-horror headline about older mothers, just turn the page.

I understand everyone’s fears, but it isn't that odd to be pregnant at 42. It is very common. Even if you look back 50 years ago, women had babies late. I know the media bombards us with the facts that women’s eggs are aging and all the risks attributed to them, but the majority of women have a normal and healthy pregnancy!

Don't listen to doomsayers! Not all 40 year old women age the same! You might be quite fertile for another 10 years. Good luck ! My mum had me at 45 and she started menopause at 55!

I am 44 and at nearly 8 weeks. Lost one at about this point not too long ago, but didn't know it until about 12 weeks into it, with ultrasound (after spotting). Had one "normal pregnancy" after the D&C [dilation & curettage], and quickly pregnant again with nothing but Nature helping us.

We just decided to let Nature do her thing. Even with the first loss that was still Nature's decision. It made it easier, in some ways, to cope.

I have an 18 year old college daughter, 16 year old son, 16 year old step daughter, and 14 year old step son. My husband and I decided it would be nice to have another child if we could. I am not sure what will happen this time around. Of course we both hope and pray that we will see our due date of 10/6 and be holding our healthy child.

I am 44 and pregnant. I didn't use anything except OPK's [Ovulation Predictor Kits] and lots of sex. Miscarriage is part of the deal with getting pregnant over 40 (3 miscarriages in the last 18 months).

This pregnancy is going well, didn't have any tests etc after miscarriages, just kept trying. Have to use OPK's for as many days as it takes (ovulation is not always when you expect). Have been taking fish oil from the start of last cycle, so don’t know if this has made any difference but is meant to help in preventing miscarriages.

If it helps, I just had my fifth child at age 47 (my other four children are adults or nearly so). I had him last month, and he's perfectly wonderful, and doesn't appear to have any problems.

The only thing that went "wrong", and it wasn't bad at that, was that I had gestational diabetes, which was discovered in the latter part of my pregnancy (when the doctors screen for diabetes). I had to watch what I ate, and took insulin. My baby weighed 9 lbs. 2.2 oz. (my next to smallest baby, by the way), and was 21 1/2 in. long.

My doctor told me of two women he delivered babies for that were over 46 years old. He told me both were healthy babies & natural.

One was after over 17 years of trying, including fertility treatments, which did not take. Then it happened naturally. The other was after a women had breast cancer and underwent chemo. A few years later she thought she was going through menopause.

It is natural to be scared, especially after reading the statistics for women over 40 getting pregnant. I am 47 and am 16 weeks pregnant. (Not planned) I'll be 48 when the baby arrives if all goes well.

We will not do any pre natal testing except for a targeted ultrasound next month. I'm scared, but I believe everything is in God's hands. I have 5 living children, miscarried in 1987 and miscarried with my last pregnancy at 18 weeks in 1993. We haven't told anyone yet, I still scared I'm going to lose this child. Keep us in your prayers.

Still pregnant at 11 weeks today at almost 45 - my birthday is Tuesday. My other kids ages are 21 (girl), 19 (girl), 17 (girl), 15 (boy), 13 (boy), 12 (boy), 9 (boy), 5 (boy), 3 (boy).

Ultrasound on Tuesday showed healthy baby with a 188 fetal heart rate. The high heartbeat scared me, but my doc said it was okay.

Anyway, your mention of getting pregnant over age 40 as though you were in your 20's... I've heard that, too, along with increased infertility over 40. Probably for most women, the issue of infertility is what comes into play.

In fact, one of the things I was told when I switched doctors, was that my chances of miscarrying, were over 50% within the first trimester, and my ability to have got pregnant in the first place was around 10% (I'm 47, though I would've been a late 46, when I conceived).

The doctor said at my age, my eggs are dwindling in amount, and I probably would've had about 200 when I conceived; also, the quality of them is supposed to be lessened with age, due to environmental exposures over time.

There are so many conflicting stories. Sometimes I read that it's almost impossible for a woman over 40 to get pregnant, and then I read other stories of women getting pregnant nearly as easily as when they were in their 20's. I was also shocked when I found out I was pregnant because I believed, from all I have heard, that it is virtually impossible to get pregnant naturally over 40. Well, we've proved that theory wrong.

Maybe it'll help to know that I'm 47, and just had my fifth child last month (my sixth pregnancy). Except for having gestational diabetes, and not a bad case of it at that, my pregnancy was AWESOME and my beautiful baby boy was born on his due date weighing in at 9 lbs. 2.2 oz and was 21 1/2 in. long.

By the way, as stated in the beginning, I've been pregnant six times, with five live births. I, too, miscarried at 6 weeks in my second pregnancy... and I was in my 20's at the time. So, yes, it's quite possible to have a healthy pregnancy, and a healthy baby later on!

A woman in England has given birth to a healthy baby girl after being inseminated with her dead husband's sperm. Diana Scott, 44, and her husband had been trying to conceive before Mr. Scott was diagnosed with cancer.

Before he died in 2002, Mr. Scott gave written permission for his wife to continue trying to conceive after his death with his frozen sperm. After four failed IVF [in vitro fertilization] attempts, Mrs. Scott finally became pregnant. Finding out you’re pregnant can often come as a surprise, but it can be downright shocking when you think you’ve entered menopause. That was the case for Deryn Minn, of Welshpool, Wales, who had been informed by her GP [general practioner - doctor] that she didn’t need to use to birth control anymore as she was menopausal and therefore unable to get pregnant.

Yet, just eight months later, Minn, 46, learned that she was in fact pregnant with her third child. Speaking about her surprising news, Minn said: “The GP said I wasn’t likely to get pregnant at my age so I was really shocked and then angry when I found out I was pregnant eight months later.”

However, those negative feelings quickly disappeared: “I’m now really grateful to the doctor, because without him I wouldn’t have Harry and he’s absolutely gorgeous.” Harry is Minn’s third child and her partner, Dave Jones, first. Minn has two teenage daughters from a previous relationship.

She said that when she was in her 30’s, she got married and they decided to try for kids. Nothing was happening for a couple of years so they started infertility treatments. She said she tried for year after year. She had many of the different forms of IVF [in vitro fertilization] with no success. She said she used hormones to such an extent to produce eggs that her body began to suffer and she lost some of her hair and teeth (I had no idea this was a side effect!)

Anyway, they finally decided to adopt at 40 and were matched with a lady who was letting them adopt. Two months before the baby's birth, her husband asked for a divorce! She said she decided that she would never have kids and her clients would be her 'children' that she nurtured.

She began dating an old professor and guess what.... She conceived naturally at 44 her now 12 year old daughter!

I wanted to add that this was a surprise pregnancy. When she told the father, he wanted her to abort, which obviously was not what she wanted, considering her years of trying. To this day he has nothing to do with his daughter and she is just beautiful.

My massage therapist has a friend whose mother had 23 children, the last in her 60's. This was in Canada, so they know when she was born. Maybe take a few years off for the story getting it wrong, but that would still put her in her late 50’s.
