Unplanned baby in late 40's, early 50's

A woman's fertility falls after the age of 35, but many an older woman has been surprised when she has fallen pregnant with an unplanned baby in her late 40's or even early 50's.

Cherie Blair, the Prime Minister's wife, was certainly not alone in assuming that her fertility was negligible only to be surprised and delighted to be proved wrong.

Late pregnancy can and does happen, and for this reason it is important to get correct advice about contraception even beyond the menopause.

Catherine

About Catherine: I am mom to three grown sons, two grandchildren and two rescue dogs. After years of raising my boys as a single mom, I remarried a wonderful man who had never had a child of his own. Unexpectedly, I found myself pregnant at 49!
Sadly we lost that precious baby at 8 weeks, and decided to try again. Five more losses, turned down for donor egg, foster care and adoption due to my age and losses - we have accepted that there will be no more babies in our house.
