My grandmother had her youngest at 45

Catherine McDiarmid-Watt | Thursday, May 07, 2009 | 0 comments

Not to mention the fact that even if the average woman started having children earlier, that wouldn’t necessarily reduce the number of babies born to women over 35, because women that age can get pregnant by accident.

Older women have been having babies for thousands of years, and even in the days when medical help was pretty much non-existent, most of them survived the experience. Queen Victoria was gone 40 when she had her youngest child.

My grandmother had her youngest child at 45. Hell, a friend of mine’s mother had twins at 43, entirely by accident (and of course, what with it being twins, everyone assumed she and her husband had been using fertility drugs rather than the Pill).

About Catherine: I am mom to three grown sons, two grandchildren and two rescue dogs. After years of raising my boys as a single mom, I remarried a wonderful man who had never had a child of his own. Unexpectedly, I found myself pregnant at 49!
Sadly we lost that precious baby at 8 weeks, and decided to try again. Five more losses, turned down for donor egg, foster care and adoption due to my age and losses - we have accepted that there will be no more babies in our house.
