I am 45, thought it was menopause

Catherine McDiarmid-Watt | Sunday, October 04, 2009 | 0 comments

After a 26 year history of infertility, including 16 cycles of Clomid in my 20's with no success, I went on to adopt a wonderful baby in 1989, returned to college and otherwise have had a rich life. I have never had a pregnancy. It became natural to me that I would never conceive.

I am 45 years old and thought I was entering menopause. I was told yesterday, based on a Beta HCG that I am around 12 weeks pregnant. Of course, I am elated. I was truly surprised , as I haven't had overwhelming pregnancy symptoms, which is why I thought I was starting menopause. Is this more common than I realize? I have never missed a period, although my last period was extremely light. - Cindy

About Catherine: I am mom to three grown sons, two grandchildren and two rescue dogs. After years of raising my boys as a single mom, I remarried a wonderful man who had never had a child of his own. Unexpectedly, I found myself pregnant at 49!
Sadly we lost that precious baby at 8 weeks, and decided to try again. Five more losses, turned down for donor egg, foster care and adoption due to my age and losses - we have accepted that there will be no more babies in our house.
